Brisket Saturdays and Sundays at Solinsky’s in Stamford

It wasn’t that long ago that the Catskill Mountains were a restaurant wasteland. Yes, there were occasional hot spots, like Woodstock and Hunter, but, in general you were faced with an indifferent smorgasbord of pizzas, tavern burgers, carryout Chinese, and the occasional roadside hot dog truck. But now all that has changed, and you can literally eat your way deliciously through the mountains, as I did for a solid week recently. Here are the best things I tried, running roughly from south to north.

Some of the best sandwiches come from bread bakeries, and Bread Alone is a sterling example. Founded in the tiny town of Boiceville in 1983, it focuses on local grains with natural leavening baked in wood-fired ovens, growing to encompass a roadside cafeteria, and more recently a weekend pizzeria. I was knocked out by the spicy green egg sandwich with sausage ($13), which layered two fried eggs and pickled scallions, green hot sauce, aioli, and arugula with pork sausage from local hogs, which equals breakfast nirvana. 3962 NY Highway 28, Boiceville
