Robert Sietsema’s New York

I’ve been a restaurant critic in New York City since the 1990s, first with a newsletter called Down the Hatch, for two decades at the Village Voice, and then for an eleven-year stretch with Eater New York. I’ve also written for Gourmet, the New York Times, Lucky Peach, and the Columbian Journalism Review, among many others.

What you’ll find here

Through this newsletter, I will continue the work I’ve been doing for more than 30 years. For $50 a year — less than the cost of dinner at a mid-priced sit-down spot — I’ll be in your inbox three times a week, offering:

  • A focus on value and good food around New York City

  • An eye on international cuisines at inexpensive restaurants

  • A first look at New York restaurants as they open

  • Full reviews for places making a mark on the dining scene

  • Best-of recommendations by cuisine and neighborhoods

  • Suggestions for different occasions and holidays

  • Food-related audios and videos around the city

  • Occasional travel posts

An advantage of Substack is that it allows readers to ask questions, give feedback, offer suggestions, and to have discussions in the comments and chats; let’s take advantage of this and get started!

Thank you so much for supporting my work and for being a part of this new endeavor. Please consider sharing this with a friend.
